Class Descriptions

2010 Course Outline

Course A   (7hrs.)  Construction Core Courses

  • WORKERS COMPENSATION

Workers’ Compensation in Florida is a complicated subject.  This course focuses on three main areas; indemnity benefits, return to work programs and liability of employers.  All contractors should be aware of how each of these affects them.

  • SAFETY

Having a list of do’s and don’ts isn’t going to make a worksite safer.  Having the correct philosophy, however, has shown to increase safety.  This class discusses the need and application of the safety philosophy.

  • BUSINESS PRACTICES

Everyone has been affected by the recent economic slowdown.  Maximize your exposure by marketing yourself effectively over the internet. Basic ideas and practical answers.

  • LAWS & RULES

Some, if not all of us, have had either our kids on the job or hired part time help at some point.  This course introduces contractors to the laws governing minors on the worksites.

  • ADVANCED CODE

The new 2007 building code is now in effect.  This portion of the course covers some of the significant changes to the code.

  • WIND MITIGATION

The Florida wind mitigation rules and applications have undergone rapid and sweeping changes since its inception.  This course covers the latest changes in rules and compliance methods.

Course B   (7 hrs.) Understanding Bonding, Additionally Insured, Mold Exclusions, Industry News and Economic Principles

  • ADDITIONALLY INSURED

The owner or contractor who seeks an additional insured endorsement generally anticipates it will receive coverage for claims that arise during the project and for construction defect claims that arise after substantial completion. This course addresses the term of ‘additional insured’ and reviews it to determine exactly what coverage is provided and by whom.

  • CONSTRUCTION BONDING

What are the different types of bonds?  Who can be bonded?  What is the cost?  These are some of the questions answered during this session on “Understanding Bonding”.

  • MOLD EXCLUSIONS

Florida has yet to construe ensuing loss provisions in the context of mold damage. Is it really water damage?  We will discuss what contractors must first establish when dealing with mold issues.

  • INDUSTRY NEWS

This section highlights some of the tough breaks for Construction Professionals in 2009 and opens discussion on what we can do to limit our liabilities and sustain our business through learning from our past.

  • LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Every year new laws go into effect and changes are made to existing laws.  It is imperative that contractors stay abreast of these changes.  It would be even better if we took a pro-active approach.  Get involved or get left behind!
